Travel Review – El Convento, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

I had the pleasure of visiting the in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Upon arriving to Old San Juan, we took a taxi into the compact city of cobblestone streets, beautiful historical and brightly colored buildings, outdoor cafes, and rich culture. As we pulled up to the hotel, we instantly fell in love. The Hotel El Convento has gorgeous Spanish Colonial architecture and design, is the only “Small Luxury Hotel” in Puerto Rico, and the oldest member of the Historic Hotels of America. This stunning boutique hotel was restored from a 350 year old Carmelite convent and centered right in the heart of Old San Juan. This hotel became one of my favorite places I have ever stayed, and that says a lot.

Arriving into their lobby, instantly I saw the black and white checkered floor. There is something so classic and timeless about this style, it’s fashionable and chic and yet historical in feel. A perfect blend.  With warm colored hanging chandeliers and wall sconces, it provided the perfect accent to their arched hallways and wood beamed ceilings. It was architecturally breathtaking. Their staff provided some of the best customer service I have experienced. So warm and friendly, they go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

When brought to our room, I could not help but marvel at the old history and “feeling” this hotel had. I felt like I had taken a step back in time yet with all the current amenities of today. The hotel has a beautiful inner courtyard with each floor having open air hallways facing the atrium. Should it rain, it rains right into this atrium, giving such a fresh and tropical feel to everything. Nothing is better than experiencing tropical weather patters of warmth and humidity, while thunderstorms push through, all the while being completely shielded from the elements in their open-air halls.

As we approached our room, I was eager with anticipation of what to expect behind the beautiful wooden doors. Our room was right at the end of a hallway (the one shown above) and we chose a queen superior room, which was perfect. The furniture in each room is perfectly fitting to the style of the hotel. I wanted to take the rug home with me (you can see it in the below pics). With marble bathrooms, floor to ceiling doors that open out to a view of the city streets, tile floors, and warm colored fabrics, this hotel goes all out in its style. (They also have great technology with a flat screen tv, Bose sound system, and free wi-fi).

One of the amenities of the hotel that I enjoyed the most was the nightly wine and cheese reception on their rooftop patio. It was such a wonderful feeling to relax each night with a glass of wine and tasty goodies while sitting outdoors viewing the gorgeous surroundings of Old San Juan below. This rooftop area also houses the hotel’s pool and spa. The hotel faces one of the most beautiful churches in the area, known as The Cathedral, which just so happen to house Ponce de Leon’s remains. Both the hotel and the cathedral face a lush open square with beautiful foliage and park benches, providing a great view of the surrounding shops and brightly colored buildings.

The hotel boasts four restaurants on site, which is a lot for a hotel with only 58 rooms! We unfortunately did not get the chance to try any of them, but I can vouch that they serve excellent drinks. You of course have to try a Pina Colada in Puerto Rico, it’s where they were invented! (You can actually visit the exact location of the first Pina Colada at a local bar/restaurant within walking distance of the hotel!) Outside the hotel, is truly magical. Take a peek at the below pictures, starting with the square right outside the hotel.

In my opinion, there is no other place to stay than the Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. Puerto Rico has a ton of larger hotel chains and resorts you can stay at, but if you are looking for a place that provides a deep cultural connection, with amazing architecture, luxury, and warmth, then you will not find it anywhere else. We rented a car and drove around the island of Puerto Rico so that we could see things outside of Old San Juan, and I would definitely recommend you do the same.
Should you need help planning an itinerary in Puerto Rico, please feel free to contact me. We have such wonderful memories of the Bioluminscent Bay off Vieques (imagine swimming in waters that glow!!), the El Yunque Rainforest (hiking and swimming in waterfalls), as well as all the other small cities and towns that we stopped in. I could go on and on.

10. Huntington Beach, California

You won't be able to stop yourself from humming Beach Boys tunes while you hang out, or hang ten, at this self-described Surf City, USA (they claim to have the West Coast's largest stretch of uninterrupted coastline). If you are looking for something beyond the epic waves and pick-up volleyball games, head to the International Surfing Museum or chill with the bohemian types at the HB Art Center. At sunset head to Huntington Beach Pier, located where Main Street meets the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, for stunning views.

9. Kennebunkport, Maine

The old-time fishing village of Kennebunkport is like a Currier and Ives print come to life (it's also the summer retreat of choice for George H.W. Bush). You can work on a lobster boat, fly-fish, or kayak past whimsical formations like Blowing Cave and Spouting Rock. Stroll by elaborate Federal and Victorian manses built by sea captains, many now housing inns, or experience history in motion at the Seashore Trolley Museum. Kennebunkport's riverside Dock Square teems with shops and galleries selling stoneware and watercolor seascapes, eco-chic boutiques stocking organic body gels, and of course purveyors of local blueberry jams. Old Orchard Beach features New England's only oceanfront amusement park where you can get your thrills on the Ferris wheel and roller coasters.

8. Traverse City, Michigan

Traverse City's tawny beaches and towering dunes merit the moniker Malibu of Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features wilderness islands, trails through diverse ecosystems, and preserved historic farmsteads. This part of Michigan has a deep history and South Manitou Island, reachable by ferry, recreates pioneer days from old schoolhouse to 1871 lighthouse while area museums celebrate everything from steam railroads to Scandinavian heritage. Traverse City's Victorian downtown boasts hundreds of galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Foodies should pick up a Tasty Traverse guide if they want to chat with brewers and bakers, fromageres and fishermen. There are also those great American summer activities like mini-golf, bumper boats, go karts, and video arcades. Early July brings the famous with arts-and-crafts fairs, air shows, and cherries baked, pressed, and jammed in every way possible.

7. Cape May, New Jersey

This isn't the Jersey Shore you see on MTV: Rocking the night away here means settling into a chair on your B&B's porch. Cape May is America's oldest seaside resort and its entire downtown of framed, gingerbread Victorian architecture was declared a National Historic Landmark. Stroll the pedestrian Washington Street Mall and pop into the family-owned cafes, ice cream parlors, and specialty shops selling handmade leather sandals and saltwater taffy. The Promenade is a classic boardwalk scene with 50s-style arcades, leading to the

6. Boca Grande, Florida

The Gulf Barrier Islands off Florida's southwest coast define laidback lifestyle: Think Hemingway's Key West before the neon, noise and nonstop partying. Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island lacks traffic lights and chain stores, but it does have a century-old lighthouse, banyan tree-lined streets, and a converted railway station shopping complex showcasing local art. Land-based activities include hiking and biking along the former train tracks, or if you want to hit the water you can island-hop from Captiva to Cabbage Key (it's one

5. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Artists have long contemplated nature's creativity along this rugged volcanic coast. It's no wonder why: The landscape features hulking boulders like 235-foot basalt Haystack Rock, tidal pools, and forests plunging to the Pacific, all punctuated by powdery strands. Numerous galleries and artists' ateliers showcase various media from glass to candle making. Several nearby museums celebrate the region's maritime and military heritage, the History Center recreates a Native American longhouse, and ranger-led tours follow in

4. Pismo Beach, California

This stretch of sand is California's "Clam Capital," wonderfully illustrated by the giant concrete bivalve sculpture. But if you are looking for something more land-based, head to nearby San Luis Obispo. The town offers classic Spanish Colonial structures including the Serra-founded Tolosa Mission, the neo-Romanesque Carnegie Library that now houses the County Historical Museum, and more architectural bounty from Frank Lloyd Wright designs to Art Deco theaters. Mission Plaza is the focal point for top shops and restaurants,

. Provincetown, Massachusetts

Welcoming all ages, races, creeds and sexual orientations, P-Town crowns the tip of Cape Cod, where it curls like a tongue stuck out at convention. Yet the Puritans' Mayflower Compact was signed here pre-Plymouth Rock; the commemorative 252-foot all-granite Pilgrim Monument offers spectacular vistas. The adjacent Provincetown Museum portrays historic events and people from the native Wampanoag tribe. Colonial clapboard buildings house B&Bs, boutiques, restaurants, and galleries. Also be sure to check what (and who) is onstage at the Provincetown Theater, where O'Neill, Stewart and Fonda honed their crafts.

. Rockport, Texas

Studies perennially rank Rockport among the nation's cleanest beaches, but you can get down 'n' dirty at the many seafood shacks and shanty bars where returning fishermen tell tales of tackling Texas-sized tarpon. Key Allegro Marina bustles, especially during July's Rockport Offshore Challenge, and The Heritage downtown district offers upscale shopping and walking tours. The Rockport Center for the Arts, Texas Maritime Museum, and Victorian landmark Fulton Mansion detail the area's history. Natural wonders include The Big Tree (a 1,000-year-old coastal live oak that is one of the country's largest), and spotting whooping cranes and ruby-throated hummingbirds in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

1. Chincoteague Island, Virginia

This tranquil landfall off Virginia's coast is famed for the feral Chincoteague ponies that roam nearby Assateague Island. Every July since 1925, the Pony Penning and auction floods the town with tourists there to watch the ponies gallop down Main Street. This area is a nature-lover's nirvana all year round, though, with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore, home to herons, bald eagles, and woodpeckers. If the weather is keeping you from visiting the birds' natural habitat, the Refuge Waterfowl Museum exhibits extensive wildlife murals, skipjack boat models, and wildfowl woodcarvings by renowned decoy crafters like carver-in-residence Delbert "Cigar" Daisy. Victorian inns and ice cream parlors, clam shacks serving Chincoteague oysters, and beachfront BBQs complete the Norman Rockwell picture.

Luxury Hotels in Arkansas

Arkansas is a relatively cheap state to travel in, and even the luxury hotels in Arkansas are well-priced. When it comes to the luxury Arkansas hotels, there aren't many 5-star establishments to choose from, and even the 4-star properties are hard to come by. As such, luxury hotels in Arkansas is a relative term, though that's not to say that there aren't some standouts. Some of the 3-star hotels in Arkansas offer a reasonable amount of luxury, and since they are more abundant than the 4- and 5-star hotels, you might depend more on them. Luxury lodging in Arkansas can come in different forms, and you can also consider looking into the state's more upscale vacation rentals if that interests you.

So you have found yourself in Nags Head, North Carolina? Well, first off, it is very common to find yourself laughing at the name of this town - but many people aren't

you understand fully where this city is: if you were to be looking at the state of North Carolina, Nags Hill would be in the mid-upper right side - literally right beside the Atlantic Ocean. Seeing that this city is incredibly beautifully set, with the great ocean as its backdrop, the common visitor to Nags Head is a vacationer. Noting this, Nags Head has so really great hotels for guests to choose from, so, I have reviewed and researched the top three of these hotels for your choosing.

The first hotel in which I reviewed is Ramada Plaza Nags Head Beach. This three-star-hotel is located literally on the beach. It is also only seven miles from the Roanoke Island Festival Park and North Carolina Aquarium. So, this hotels greatest feature, is its location - it's literally in the middle of all Nags Head has to offer. 10. The Penthouse Suite, The Martinez Hotel, Cannes

Nightly Rate: $18,000

This is the biggest, most expensive, and the only terraced penthouse suite on the Cote d’Azur. Both of the two suites has a jacuzzi, plasma screen televisions, DVD library, kitchen, open bar, private butler on call 24/7 (ditto for a limousine), and an option to join both suites into one big apartment. The luxury has no limit here – the design is kept in the Art Deco style, with streamlined furniture, silk curtains and teak parquet floors.
The wraparound terrace is 2,000 square feet with the views of the Lerins Islands as well as the entire Bay of Cannes and can comfortably hold 100 people. One Saudi sheik liked the suite so much he wanted to rent it for five years. The hotel said no. What else can you say? Tres magnifique!

9. Ritz-Carlton Suite, Ritz-Carlton Moscow

Nightly Rate: $18.200

The floor-to-ceiling windows in the Ritz-Carlton Suite will give you the most beautiful views of the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Christ the Savior Cathedral. The furnishings are in a Classic Russian Imperial style. The 2,500 square-foot suite comes with a spacious living room, dining area, library, office room and boardroom, grand piano, and heated floor.
You will get to enjoy five meals a day and their very own KGB-approved autonomous energy supply system and secure telecommunications array.

7. Imperial Suite, Park Hyatt, Vendôme, Paris

Nightly Rate: $20.000

This pricey suite is located on the 5th floor and takes 200-sq.-meters. A 60-sq.-meter balcony is overlooking the Rue de la Paix, with an outstanding view of the Vendôme column. The Imperial Suite has high ceilings, a dining room, kitchenette, bar, and a mansard roof. It also includes in-suite spa with whirlpool bath, steam room shower and a built-in massage table. Also included are high-speed Internet access and a computer with flat screen monitor, multi-line telephones, and a separate work area to help you enjoy the work process.

8. Royal Suite, Burj Al Arab, Dubai

Nightly Rate: $19.000

The two-story, 8,400-square-foot suite features views over the Arabian sea, marble flooring, a rotating four-poster bed in the master bedroom, dining area, and a private cinema and elevator between the split-level rooms.
The marble bath comes fully stocked with full-sized products from Hermes. Guests are met by a chauffeur driven Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph (or, for a bit extra, by a helicopter). A personal butler stands 24/7 at the ready to fulfill every wish. The Royal Suite is the last word in luxury with a marble and gold staircase, leopard print tufted carpets and Versace linens.

6. The Bridge Suite, The Atlantis, Bahamas

Nightly Rate: $22.000
The Bridge Suite is located on top of a bridge that connects the two Royal Towers buildings, so it overlooks the entire resort and marina. An 800 square foot balcony and 12-foot high ceilings throughout with full length windows allow you to enjoy a 360 view of the water, lagoons and pools in Paradise Island. We can make a guess that most of the price is paid for the location of the suite. Forbes reports the suite has hosted guests including Oprah, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, and Bill Gates.
The suite has 10 rooms that are decorated in black, red and gold (including a 22-karat gold chandelier in the dining room). The living room is a 1,250-square-foot room with grand piano and twin entertainment centers. The master bedroom has a sitting area, his-and-hers closets so large that you can park your car there, and hand-painted linens. The kitchen also has its own entrance, so a permanent staff of seven, including a butler and a cook can access the rooms without bothering you.
