Pelican Hotel Miami Beach
Pelican Hotel Miami Beach
Owned by the same creative folks behind the Diesel Jeans company, the Pelican (whose brazen, albeit appropriate, motto is "A myth in its own limelight") is South Beach's only self-professed "toy-hotel," in which each of its 30 rooms and suites is decorated as outrageously as some of the area's more colorful drag queens. Each room has been designed daringly and rather wittily by Swedish interior decorator Magnus Ehrland, whose countless trips to antiques markets, combined with his wild imagination, have turned room no. 309, for instance, into the "Psychedelic(ate) Girl," room no. 201 into the "Executive Fifties" suite, and room no. 209 into the " Love, Peace and Leafforest" room. But the most popular is the tough-to-score room no. 215, or the "Best Whorehouse," which is said to have made even former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss red with envy. The Penthouse that occupies the top floor is almost more 007 than James Bond's own pad -- very '60s, in color and pattern, with a big aquarium built into a copper wall and a yellow Shultz table and chair.

Police apathy still haunts this survivor
MUMBAI: Dr Tilu Mangeshikar has dealt with patients severely in need of trauma care not only in India, but also in other countries such as Germany. While she is no stranger to blood and gore, on the night of November 26, 2008, she did something she never done before, nurse the wounds of a man shot in the stomach using little else besides cutlery and table cloth.
She was one of several people holed up in the Lavender Room at the Taj on the night of November 26, as two gunmen lay siege to Mumbai's oldest five-star hotel. During an aborted evacuation attempt that night, the group of hostages nearly walked into the terrorists who began shooting straight at them, severely injuring Rajan, a Taj staffer.
Mangeshikar spent eight hours on the floor beside Rajan. She recalls how frustrated she was with the authorities that night. "I had one hand inside Rajan's stomach, ensuring that his guts didn't spill out, and with the other hand I held a mobile phone. I spoke to a very senior official in the Mumbai police force and asked him to rescue us from the Lavender Room as there was a man who was severely. I kept telling them that he might not make it through the night unless medical supplies reached us. The police officer asked me to pop my head out of the Lavender Room so that the cops could identify the location. I found it extremely frustrating that the police couldn't simply get hold of a map of the Taj and figure out where the room was," says Mangeshikar.

MUMBAI: The BMC will not remove the security barricades erected around the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Trident till it gets an all-clear signal from the Mumbai police commissioner. Both the hotels were targets of the 26/11 terror attacks two years ago.
Ashish Kumar Singh, former additional municipal commissioner (city), who has joined the chief minister's office, said he had held a meeting with the city police on how to deal with barricades on a public road.
"Based on their assessment of the security threat perception, I had recommended that, till the police commissioner gave an all-clear signal, the barricades should be maintained," he said.
According to sources, police officials at the meeting explained that they feared an attack similar to that on the Hotel Le Meridien in Pakistan where a truck laden with explosives was rammed into the hotel before being detonated.
"In view of such a high threat perception, it was decided to maintain the barricades," said sources.
Local residents had complained about the barricades being a daily hurdle. "When there is even the slightest encroachment by a citizen, the BMC swiftly takes action. The police have no right to tell the civic body what should be allowed on the road. These barricades can be erected within their premises and not on a public road in an already congested locality. It is inconveniencing citizens and causing daily traffic jams," said Vinod Shekhar, the local Congress corporator.
Meanwhile, the demolition notices issued to the two five-star hotels by the A-ward office for encroaching on public property, now stand cancelled. The ward office had even sent a bill for penalty and stacking charges to the tune of Rs 6.4 crore to the two hotels for the period ranging from September 1, 2009, to May 31, 2011. "As for the security barricades, we will not collect any money because they have now been authorized in a joint meeting of the BMC and the police," said S M Dhamane, assistant municipal commissioner, A-ward.

Tabu in Life of Pi
Post our report on newcomer Suraj Singh playing the protagonist in Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's bestseller Life Of Pi there is better news.
The latest buzz is that while the Academy Award winning director is auditioning actors like Sushant Singh and Sonu Sood to cast Pi's father, he has apparently signed Tabu to play the role of Pi's mother in the film. The makers of the film will start shooting in Pondicherry in January 2011.
Our source said, "Ang Lee was in Mumbai some days ago and stayed in a five star hotel in Bandra. His casting director and he had shortlisted some actors who were called for auditions."
Confirming this, Sushant Singh said, "Yes, I met Ang Lee and his casting director. I had sent them a tape and they called me to meet them. They have shortlisted a couple of people and I am one of the contenders. I am hoping for the best."
Meanwhile, Lee apparently also met Tabu and signed her on for the role of Pi's mother. Tabu has been very selective with her choice of films of late. She was last seen in Toh Baat Pakki earlier this year and in Cheeni Kum in 2007.
Though the actress has worked in a couple of films down South, she has not signed on any new Bollywood films in the meantime.
Another source close to the film said, "Ang Lee had been watching Tabu's work and was very impressed by her acting abilities." Though Tabu did not revert to any of our messages, we wish her luck for her new venture.

Accessible tourism
Accessible tourism is the ongoing endeavour to ensure tourist destinations, products and services are accessible to all people, regardless of their physical limitations, disabilities or age. It encompasses publicly and privately owned tourist locations. The term has been defined by Darcy and Dickson (2009, p34) as:
Accessible tourism enables people with access requirements, including mobility, vision, hearing and cognitive dimensions of access, to function independently and with equity and dignity through the delivery of universally designed tourism products, services and environments. This definition is inclusive of all people including those travelling with children in prams, people with disabilities and seniors [1] [1].

Living in hotels
A number of public figures have notably chosen to take up semi-permanent or permanent residence in hotels.
* Actor Richard Harris lived at the Savoy Hotel while in London. Hotel archivist Susan Scott recounts an anecdote that when he was being taken out of the building on a stretcher shortly before his death he raised his hand and told the diners "it was the food."[7]
* Inventor Nikola Tesla lived last 10 years of his life at the New Yorker Hotel until 1943 when he died in the hotel room.
* Millionaire Howard Hughes lived his last few years in a Las Vegas hotel.
* Larry Fine (of the Three Stooges) and his family lived in hotels, due to his extravagant spending habits and his wife's dislike for housekeeping. They first lived in the President Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where his daughter Phyllis was raised, then the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood. Not until the late 1940s did Larry buy a home in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, California.
* American actress Elaine Stritch lived in the Savoy Hotel in London for over a decade. [8]
* Fashion designer Coco Chanel lived in the Hotel Ritz Paris on and off for more than 30 years.

Resort hotels
Some hotels are built specifically to create a captive trade, example at casinos and holiday resorts. Though of course hotels have always been built in popular desinations, the defining characteristic of a resort hotel is that it exists purely to serve another attraction, the two having the same owners.
In Las Vegas there is a tradition of one-upmanship with luxurious and extravagant hotels in a concentrated area known as the Las Vegas Strip. This trend now has extended to other resorts worldwide, but the concentration in Las Vegas is still the world's highest: nineteen of the world's twenty-five largest hotels by room count are on the Strip, with a total of over 67,000 rooms.[2]
In Europe Center Parcs might be considered a chain of resort hotels, since the sites are largely man-made (though set in natural surroundings such as country parks) with captive trade, whereas holiday camps such as Butlins and Pontin's are probably not considered as resort hotels, since they are set at traditional holiday destinations which existed before the camps.

Classification
Hotels are also classified[by whom?] by service type ranging for all-inclusive full-service resorts that cater to vacationers to small limited service hotels that cater to transient business travelers. In this regard, it should be noticed that lower classification or lower star rating does not necessarily mean that the hotel lacks standard. A popular 3-star hotel may indicate that the hotel does not have large conference facilities, which is usually a hallmark of 5-star establishments. The main categories of hotels are as follows;
* Full Service Upscale
o Examples include Conrad Hotels, Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons Hotels, and JW Marriott

Etymology
The word hotel is derived from the French hôtel (coming from hôte meaning host), which referred to a French version of a townhouse or any other building seeing frequent visitors, rather than a place offering accommodation. In contemporary French usage, hôtel now has the same meaning as the English term, and hôtel particulier is used for the old meaning. The French spelling, with the circumflex, was also used in English, but is now rare. The circumflex replaces the 's' found in the earlier hostel spelling, which over time took on a new, but closely related meaning. Grammatically, hotels usually take the definite article - hence "The Astoria Hotel" or simply "The Astoria."
Historic hotels
Some hotels have gained their renown through tradition, by hosting significant events or persons, such as Schloss Cecilienhof in Potsdam, Germany, which derives its fame from the Potsdam Conference of the World War II allies Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin in 1945. The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in Mumbai is one of India's most famous and historic hotels because of its association with the Indian independence movement. Some establishments have given name to a particular meal or beverage, as is the case with the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, United States where the Waldorf Salad was first created or the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, Austria, home of the Sachertorte. Others have achieved fame by association with dishes or cocktails created on their premises, such as the Hotel de Paris where the crêpe Suzette was invented or the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, where the Singapore Sling cocktail was devised.
Hôtel Ritz in Paris, France
A number of hotels have entered the public consciousness through popular culture, such as the Ritz Hotel in London, United Kingdom, through its association with Irving Berlin's song, 'Puttin' on the Ritz'. The Algonquin Hotel in New York City is famed as the meeting place of the literary group, the Algonquin Round Table, and Hotel Chelsea, also in New York City, has been the subject of a number of songs and the scene of the stabbing of Nancy Spungen (allegedly by her boyfriend Sid Vicious). The Waldorf Astoria and Statler hotels in New York City are also immortalized in the names of Muppets Statler and Waldorf.[citation needed]
The luxurious Grand Hotel Europe in Saint Petersburg, Russia achieved fame with its inclusion in the James Bond film GoldenEye.
